My name is Sophia MacDonald, I am born and raised in Calgary Alberta where I play for Genesis Basketball. I am in grade 8 and a 5’6” Guard\Forward in the class of 2029. Over this last spring season I played with Rise Basketball, where my team and I did fairly well winning about 4 tournaments. I’m currently going into the third year of my basketball career. Although I have only been playing for two years I have accomplished many things. I was invited to play on the NLB Made Hoops team at the beginning my second year. I had the opportunity to participate in the the Phenom National Girls Camp in early August and learned many skills that I will need both on and off of the court.
I am now playing on the Genesis Made Hoops team, we will travel to Reno Nevada, Sacramento California, Seal Beach California, and Las Vegas Nevada. This will be my first year playing with Genesis for Made Hoops, as last year I played with Northern Lights Basketball. I will be playing in the Made 7 age bracket on this team.
In January of 2024, I was invited to play at the Alberta Shooting Stars show case, where I won MVP and made 9\12 three pointers in 30 seconds to win the three point contest. At that time I was half way through seventh grade. Since there was no seventh grade team my teacher\coach placed me in the eighth grade age group, where I played my heart out to accomplish all of the things I did.
Throughout the fall/winter 2023 season I played on the Northern Lights Made 6 team in the Made Hoops circuit. We travelled to Arizona, Sacramento, and Seattle. We sadly did not make it to the final tournament in Las Vegas. This was my first ever experience going to the United States for basketball, and this was my first club like basketball team as I had not played on for any clubs previous to joining the team.
Now I am heading into my third season this fall. I am playing for Bow River this community season. I am attending Wilma Hansen School in Deer Run and am currently playing on the Senior team. I will continue to train (skills/strength) throughout this fall and winter seasons.

Teams I Have Played For
-
This was my first basketball team, it was my community team which I played for the fall and spring seasons of 2022\2023. That year we won bronze in provincials and C.M.B.A, along with winning gold in the spring season. I also played with this team for the following fall 2023\2024 season. Over the 2023\2024 fall season we earned first place in division two C.M.B.A and provincials.

Over my last spring season I played with Rise, this was my first time playing club basketball and only my second spring season. In this season we ended up winning about four of our tournaments and came third in a few. My team clicked pretty well and I feel as though I fit in with these girls, and played pretty well with this team.

I was recruited to play for this team although I had not had any previous experience in club basketball. Through Northern Lights I was put on a Rise fall team and continued with them into the spring. This was Northern Lights first year playing in the Made Hoops circuit. I was on this team through the fall and winter of the 2023\2024 season. We played in the United States for the circuit tournaments, going to Arizona, Sacramento and Seattle.

I played on the junior A team at Langdon School, we played two tournaments, one in Airdrie and one in Langdon. We ended up making it to zones, where we only played two games. In the end I believe we had a fairly successful season.

I have just begun my journey with Genesis, but I already feel at home.
